The essential memory of home and family is built upon the emotional connection between people. A space, on the other hand, is the medium that allows for the interaction of family members, the making of memories, and the development of core values. The Newton's Cradle residence embodies this concept, creating a space that nourishes and strengthens family bonds.
The design of the Newton's Cradle residence is not only unique in its concept but also in its realization. The large-sized windows allow for ample natural lighting, reducing the need for electric lights and promoting energy efficiency. Unlike other high-end living spaces that commonly use stones as the main material, this residence utilizes wallpapers and artificial leathers to create the same effect while minimizing the environmental impact caused by mining processes.
Measuring 226 square meters, the Newton's Cradle residence is a testament to the designer's attention to detail and commitment to creating a comfortable living environment. The perpetual swinging of the design elements in the residence demonstrates the conservation of momentum, symbolizing the way family members interact with each other in the living environment. Home becomes the center where energy flows, going back and forth.
The design of the public areas in the Newton's Cradle residence prioritizes open spaces and reduces the use of traditional partitions. This not only improves ventilation but also minimizes unnecessary waste of building materials. The consistent style of the design offers a comfortable living environment, where daily aesthetics and core values align. By satisfying the owner's preferences, the design also contributes to sustainability by reducing the need for frequent renovations and redecorations.
One of the design challenges faced by Clement Tung Jeun Cheng was creating a sense of depth and three-dimensionality in the space. The use of arches, curved lines, and ovals interweaves throughout the residence, transforming two-dimensional shapes into a three-dimensional experience. From the front, the design appears as simple lines, but from other angles, it reveals intricate three-dimensional shapes, adding depth and detail to the space.
The Newton's Cradle residence, completed in August 2021 in Macau, is a testament to the designer's creativity, technical expertise, and commitment to creating a space that fosters interaction and strengthens family bonds. Inspired by the concept of Newton's Cradle, this design is a symbol of the perpetual motion and energy that flows within a family home.
